The Atlanta Chamber Players are excited to celebrate our first concert with new Artistic Director Elizabeth Pridgen at one of our favorite venues, the New American Shakespeare Tavern. The program features an extensive cast of musicians in works that showcase the group’s versatility and programming variety.
The concert opens with a light-hearted quartet by French composer Jean Francaix. Scored for the unusual combination of english horn and strings and featuring the Atlanta Symphony’s principal oboist Elizabeth Koch Tiscione, the work evokes the wit and sophistication of a Parisian in Paris.
Ludwig Thuille’s Sextet for Piano and Wind Quintet is perhaps the composer’s most popular chamber work. Completed in 1887, it is characterized by luscious harmonies and flowing melodic lines reminiscent of Brahms and Schumann. The innovative and virtuosic writing for all six players provides a brilliant close to the first half.
Our new Artistic Director is the featured player in the chamber music version of Chopin’s F minor Piano Concerto. Originally composed for piano and full orchestra, this small ensemble arrangement provides the opportunity for greater intimacy and freedom and illuminates the interplay between instruments.
We invite our audience to come early and enjoy dinner and drinks in advance of the performance. Doors open at 6:15, with the concert following at 7:30 (food and beverage not included in the price of the concert ticket).

We return to the Ahavath Achim Synagogue with a program featuring the world premiere of a new chamber work by acclaimed American composer Adam Schoenberg. The concert spans the centuries; in addition to the new premiere, it includes works by 20th century master Srul Irving Glick and 19th century great, Antonin Dvořák.
Glick’s Suite Hebraique No. 5 is a three-movement work for flute, clarinet, violin and cello based on melodies the composer wrote in celebration of important occasions in the lives of his friends and family. The 15-minute suite beautifully communicates the importance of Jewish heritage in Glick’s life.
The ACP is proud to commission Adam Schoenberg in this new piece for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. Schoenberg is a member of Robert Spano’s Atlanta School of Composers and has had works premiered by the Atlanta Symphony and other major orchestras and ensembles around the country.
The concert closes with the Piano Quintet in A Major from Dvořák. This work is one of the masterpieces of the piano quintet repertoire.

We welcome new friends and old favorites for our annual concert at the acoustically-superior Spivey Hall. Noted soloists and chamber musicians Amy Schwartz Moretti and Julie Albers join the ACP for an evening of great music by some of the world’s most celebrated composers. The first half features a duo and trio, with all five musicians coming together after intermission for the monumental Brahms Piano Quintet.
Bohuslav Martinů’s Three Madrigals for violin and viola received its premiere performance in 1947 to great critical acclaim and continues to be among the most popular duos performed today. ACP favorites Helen Kim and Cathy Lynn open the concert with this work inspired by Czech folk elements and the English madrigal.
The piano trio of Claude Debussy is an early chamber piece that evokes a unique style not necessarily associated with the composer’s more mature works. It gives listeners the rare opportunity to hear the teenage voice of this remarkable composer on the cusp of great genius. Amy Schwartz Moretti and Julie Albers are joined by their regular trio partner and ACP Artistic Director Elizabeth Pridgen in this delightful work.
All five players combine forces to close the program with Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F minor. A dark and powerful work, it is one of the great masterpieces in all chamber music literature.

Our 39th season concludes with a return visit to the Shakespeare Tavern in a concert featuring noted French and American composers. Atlanta Symphony principal clarinetist Laura Ardan and ACP favorite soprano Ann Marie McPhail will join for the world premiere of VocalEasy, a new work by Atlanta-based composer Mark Gresham. Popular American composer Philip Glass will also be on the menu, as well as French masters Ravel and Debussy.
Philip Glass’ String Quartet No. 5 opens the all-American first half. While incorporating many of his trademark repetitive qualities, this quartet is remarkable for its rhythmic and dynamic contrasts. Mark Gresham’s new work for soprano, clarinet, and piano closes this compelling first half of music by living composers.
The great French composers Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel provide the finale for our season. Debussy’s Rhapsody for clarinet and piano is a work of extreme beauty and nuance demonstrating the composer’s vast array of color and dynamics. Guest artists Amy Schwartz Moretti and Julie Albers are back with pianist Elizabeth Pridgen to conclude the program with the dazzling Ravel piano trio. This brilliant work is considered one of the gems of the piano trio repertoire.

The Atlanta Chamber Players perform six subscription soirée concerts per year in homes and intimate settings in the Atlanta metro area. This informal series complements the group’s formal public artistic concerts. The soirées are fully subscribed with a waiting list and are limited to approximately 70 attendees at each, depending on the size and available performance space of the home.
