“Opening Concert: Quickly Composed Trios”
Albert ROUSSEL | Trio for flute, viola and cello, Op. 40 |
Mark BULLER | Motion Studies (World Premiere) |
Ludwig van BEETHOVEN | Piano Trio No. 7 in B-flat major, op. 97, Archduke Trio |
Todd Skitch, flute • Ted Gurch, clarinet
Helen Hwaya Kim, violin • Amy Schwartz Moretti, violin
Catherine Lynn, viola • Brad Ritchie, cello
Julie Albers, cello • Elizabeth Pridgen, piano
The Atlanta Chamber Players open our season at the New American Shakespeare Tavern with a concert consisting of three trios. Each piece was composed very quickly, showing off the inherent talents of the featured composers.
Composed in just 15 days during September of 1929, Albert Roussel's trio for flute, viola, and cello is an elegant work that highlights the flute in particular. A marvelous French composer, Roussel was also a renowned teacher whose composition students included Bohuslav Martinu, Erik Satie, and Edgard Varese.
The ACP is pleased to present the World Premiere of Mark Buller's Motion Studies at our opening concert. The third movement of his trio was composed in just 14 days for the Rapido! Composition Contest. As the National Grand Prize Winner of the contest, Buller was commissioned to expand his piece to three movements. Though based in Houston, Texas, Buller will be in attendance at the concert. As part of his Grand Prize, his new piece will be performed by chamber ensembles in Boston, Dallas, Detroit, and San Francisco later this season. In addition, Atlanta audiences will be able to hear his new Rapido! commission for the Atlanta Symphony on June 1st and 3rd. The ACP would like to gratefully acknowledge that none of the Rapido! Contest activities would be possible without the support of the Antinori Foundation.
The evening will conclude with Beethoven’s masterful Piano Trio No. 7, widely known as the Archduke Trio. Although he had made a few sketches in the summer of 1810, the piece was largely composed by Beethoven between March 3 and 26 in 1811, with an outpouring of musical inspiration. Dedicated to his pupil and patron Archduke Rudolph, the youngest son of Emperor Leopold II, this trio is one of Beethoven's most powerful and penetrating works of art.
Join us for the Tavern’s pub dinner and drinks before the concert, or just come in time for the start of the performance. Doors open at 6:15, concert begins at 7:30 (ticket price does not include dinner or drinks).

“Brahms and Vaughan Williams”
Ralph VAUGHAN WILLIAMS | Lark Ascending for violin and piano |
Johannes BRAHMS | Clarinet Trio in A minor, Op. 114 | Ralph VAUGHAN WILLIAM | Piano Quintet in C minor |
Alcides Rodrigues, clarinet • David Coucheron, violin
Catherine Lynn, viola • Brad Ritchie, cello
Colin Corner, double bass • Elizabeth Pridgen, piano
We are pleased to return to the Ahavath Achim Synagogue for a concert featuring the timeless music of Johannes Brahms and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Lark Ascending is possibly the most popular piece of music written by a British composer. Written in 1914 on the eve of World War I, the piece conjures up images of the pastoral life of England. Often heard in an orchestrated version, the ACP presents the piece as it was originally written - for piano and violin.
The Brahms Trio on this concert is a beautiful showcase for all three instruments, but most particularly the clarinet. Written in the twilight of his career, it was inspired by the playing of clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld. Brahms went on to compose three more clarinet-focused works with Mühlfeld in mind. They are all treasures of the literature. Last on the program for our concert at the Synagogue will be the Vaughan Williams Piano Quintet. Like Schubert's famous Trout quintet, Vaughan Williams includes a double bass, giving us the opportunity for new ASO Principal Bassist Colin Corner to make his ACP debut. One of the composer's earliest works, this piece is heavily influenced by Brahms and is sure to be a highlight of the season.
Audience members at this concert are encouraged to stay afterwards for a lovely post-concert reception from our friends at the synagogue. All are welcome!

The ACP's Soirée Series
The Atlanta Chamber Players
perform eight subscription Soirée events per year in homes and intimate settings in the Atlanta metro area. This informal series
complements the group’s formal public artistic concerts. The soirées are typically fully subscribed with a waiting list and are limited
to approximately 75 attendees at each event, depending on the size and available performance space of the home.
A growing list of loyal and passionate supporters eagerly await the chance to hear beautiful music performed expertly by leading musicians of the Atlanta Symphony, see incredible local homes, learn about chamber music, instruments, and composers and meet other chamber music enthusiasts. Our Soirée audience and ACP musicians count these experiences among their favorite musical outlets. Contact us for information on how to become a Soirée subscriber or for information on hosting one of our Soirée evenings. When available, individual tickets to each Soirée event are $120 per person. Email us or call 404-594-3445 to inquire about availability.
